Woman, actress, TV producer, fashion icon. These are all words that can be used to describe Laverne Cox. Here’s another one, Feminist.

Laverne Cox on the cover of Time Magazine.

Born May 29th, 1984, as Roderick Leverne Cox, Laverne Cox is who I am choosing for my eminent person this year. At age 11, Laverne attempted suicide because she was bullied for not acting like someone who was assigned male at birth should. Thankfully she has come a long way from there, now a 34 year-old, beautiful woman and MOGAI Rights activist. Laverne is best known for her portrayal of Sophia Burset on the Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black. Before filming for OITNB, Laverne was a producer and co-host for makeover series, TRANSform me.

I personally feel similar to Laverne because we are both females belonging to marginalised groups.  Her as a Transwoman and me as a bisexual.  I think Laverne is a great role model because she is not afraid to be who she is and a lot of little girls, boys, and nonbinary kids need to see that instead of just the regular white cis man.

While doing Eminent this year I hope to learn more about the MOGAI community, and societies views on feminism. I will be very interested to see if, over the year a general opinion on feminism is changed, and how it has done so.
